Why Would I Want To Get A Golden Retriever lab Mix?

At first getting a mixed dog may not seem like a good idea, but in some cases mixed breeds can work out very well and you can gain the benefits of both breeds.  One mix that consistently works out for its owners is the golden retriever lab mix.  These two breeds got together very well and a golden retriever lab mix is often very sought after because of this.   Now you never will be able to win any dog shows, but if you are looking for family pet that has great temerment and is good with kids, then the golden retriever lab mix may be just that.

Qualities Of A Golden Retriever Lab Mix

While all dogs have their own unique attributes, with most breeds you can predict certain things. Beagles almost always have a ton of energy, hounds are usually much more relaxed, and the list goes on.  The same thing can be said for a golden retriever lab mix.

The first you will almost always find in a golden retriever is a great intelligence.  This carries over into the mix as well.  Labradors are one of the smarter breeds around, and golden retrievers are even smarter than that.  Consistently retrievers will rank very high in intelligence exams, so this mix generally will also be extremely smart.  This can be both a boon and hindrance.  If you are looking for a very smart dog than this mix will most certainly fall into that category.  If you are looking for a dog that is not as smart and perhaps a bit less curious, then maybe you should not look at this mix.

A second quality that is very predictable in a golden retriever lab mix is their temperament.  Unlike others like a lab chow mix, you can expect the temperament of a golden retriever lab mix will almost always be very mild and attentive.  Lab chows can be extremely unpredictable; with some being like their lab parents and being very mild, will others can be extremely hostile and uncontrollable.

There are many other features of the mixing of these two breeds that make them desirable.  There size will generally be predictable as both dogs are of similar stature.  Coloration and shape will also be predictable, especially between a retriever and a yellow lab.  If both these dogs have qualities you like, then you may want to consider looking at a golden retriever lab mix.

Have any idea where to find puppies of this mix? I’m desperatley looking for a golden retriever lab mix and cannot find any in Iowa.

There are some of these puppies usually available through rescue sites — sos quebec ontario dog rescue or through local shelters, humane societies etc.
They come in black as well as the light colouring. I’m going through the process of adopting one of the black ones.

I have a golden lab, and she’s the sweetest dog ever! Her name’s Dixie, and she’s six years old. She’s very smart and playful, but she’s a little super-hyper and stubborn sometimes. She’s a really great dog, though. I would recommend a golden lab to anyone! But a few warnings: They eat A LOT. They can be destructive sometimes (Dixie has chewed up a few things of mine, like some shoes and the charger for my old Nintendo DS). And they need lots of training when they’re puppies! Dixie kinda housetrained herself, and I taught her to sit, but that’s all. I regret that I didn’t teach her not to jump up on people, or to not rush out of doors, and not to pull on a leash (it’s almost like she’s taking me for walks!). But if you have the money and time to raise a golden lab, you should definitely get one!

Our family dog Journey recently passed away. He was a Golden / Lab mix and was a special dog. We are looking for the same mix in either a puppy or a younger dog. I would travel to pick up the dog.

    Thanks,
    George

Our dear, sweet black Lab/Golden mix died just shy of her 14th b-day in October (’09) and we miss her terribly. We would choose this mix over any other and have been looking but without much luck so far. We’d want a another black girl with fur more like a Golden – a black Golden essentially and put up with the seemingly endless shedding. She was the gentlest, most accepting dog we’ve ever owned or met and was completely trustworthy around any other living being, human, canine, feline, etc., even insects. Not an aggressive cell in here body. If you find one, take it home and be happy forever.

Hi, I have a yellow lab/golden mix and he is a dream. Bradford is a year old now and still a bundle of energy. He is a real comic and greets me with a toy everyday. He can walk for miles and has three walks a day and has to bring a stick back every time. We also have a duck, chickens, fish,a rabbit and a goat and is lovely with them all. He could so easily hurt them if not kill them but he never has and is so gentle if not a bit heavy footed at times!! He Greets every one with a huge jump and a lick-a-minute. He loves his walks but will sniff every blade of grass and rock and he loves to chase birds which means that if he wants to go to the left THEN we go to the left…..even if you dont want to go there!!!!! Bright, funny, kind and loving….a true best friend.

I have a Golden Labrador named Tyde (I bought him in Tuscaloosa and wanted to be creative with the name). He’s right at a year old, and he is absolutely beautiful. He’s a bit high strung, but otherwise a great dog. I’m sad because I’m about to have to get rid of him since my husband just left for the army and I work too much to be home with him all the time. Tyde is very smart and very playful. There is never a dull moment with him!

I have an eight month old Golden Lab named Harry. He is the color of a the White Lab and fur hair length of the Golden. He has some golden tips on his ears. He is a great family dog and no one can resist him. He loves to ride in the vehicles and swim in the pool. He knows stay, sit, rollover, catches a treat off his nose, fetches and returns, stop barking, no biting, get down. He does not let me out of his site. I did not predict having to take time off from work to raise him though. As hard as you try, they will always find something to chew up and at times it can be costly. That is frustrating but I love him and realize he is a dog. I would highly recommend this type of mix to anyone who loves loving dogs. The dog will think it is a human and will try to live like one.

I just got a Golden Retriever/Labrador of three months beautiful specimen and playful (HOPE)… Yet, I have a Lab?/Sharpei (FAITH) and does not like Hope… Faith does not want him in the house yet loves all dogs in the neighborhood… I am afraid she changes from being the nicest inside dog which slept on my bed with me and in her own room to hurting Hope so I might have to give him up… I do have a yard yet I am not sure if I can handdle both…

We should be having a litter of Golden Labs in about a month and a half. We decided to mate our pure bred female Yellow Lab with a pure bred Golden Retriever instead of another Lab because we have heard so many wonderful things about the mix. From all the stories we have heard and all of the pictures we have seen, I think we have made a good choice. We are in Northern California if anyone is interested in a pup when they are here. Should be born around the end of December 2010. My E-mail is iamzoanne@aol.com.

I have a 6 month old male golden retriever/ labrador mix named Bruce. I’ve owned many dogs, Bruce is by far the best. A little on the hyper side because of his young age, but great on long walks and smart as heck. I love this mix!!

I had a golden/lab mix. He was chocolate in color w/ the long soft fur of the golden. In essence he looked like a chololate colored golden retriever. Had a great big heart shaped white mutt spot on his chest. I just had him put down at home this past summer & am still extremely heart broken. He lived into his 17th year. Intelligent, protective, so gentle & goofy too. What a great mix of breeds this is!

We have a white lab golden retriver mix named Maggie. She is 17 years old and still going. When she was 12 we had our first child and maggie has done great with him. I do not belive there is a better breed out there. Other than her recent bladder issues and hip conditions she is in good health and spirit. I would reccomend this breed to anyone young or old with or without kids.

Frenny, it is never to late to take her to obedience classes. They will help you teach her the commands that just could save her life, especially not to bolt out the door. Check the phone book, kennel clubs, or private trainers. Kennel clubs are usually quite reasonable. Good Luck.

We just got a golden lab/retriever yesterday from a local shelter. Lovely two year old that has already fit right in and has learned new ‘tricks’ in a day! I would already highly recommend. He joined our family with a chocolate lab we’ve had for 8 years. They have been great!

I am looking for a golden retriever and lab mix male dog, we have a big backyard for the dog to play in and we have 6 family members who all enjoy playing with dogs. If you know any breeders that have the lab and golden mix or is a breeder that has that type of dog, could you please contact me by my e-mail. Thank-You very much. My e-mail is jazminet_1997@hotmail.com.

People always would ask what kind of dog I had. my reply: “the BEST” that is what a lab/golden mix is…the best! Best of the two best breeds. My dear Mario passed away unexpectedly at the age of 10, heart worms for which he was taking preventive treatment…doesn’t always work says the vet now. I will be looking now for another one. It is ashamed they are only available due to ‘mistakes’. They should be bred on purpose as they make fine well rounded family dogs without the con genitive issues that plague the pure breeds. Please post any info on how to find this rare mix breed. Thank you…

I grew up in England and we always had a golden retriever cross lab and I think they are the best dogs ever! We currently have two rescue dogs that are 15 years old and not very active and so I am putting out feelers for a lab x retriever puppy. If anyone is planning a litter soon or even has pups almost ready to go and they are not too far from the New York area, please contact me at jewel75k@optonline.net.

First of all, you SHOULD NEVER encourage people to actually BUY mixed breed dogs. They are not “hybrids” or “designer dogs.” They are mixes and mutts. You should never pay anything close to what you would pay for a pure bred dog from a RESPONSIBLE breeder. What is a responsible breeder you ask? One that breeds not to make money or because they have a great dog, but because they want to improve and maintain the breed that they love. They pay for health clearances of their dogs to try and guarantee clear eyes, elbows, hips, and such. Their dogs also have pedigrees lined with ancestors who have these clearances.

They don’t breed their females until they are AT LEAST two years old and never more than once every year or two. More than that, and your mother won’t be very healthy, nor will the pups. Just because a female goes into heat twice a year, doesn’t mean she should be bred twice a year.

Lastly, responsible breeders make sure through contracts that their puppies go to good homes and are willing to take them back if circumstances arise where they don’t fit in a home. This helps to ensure that there are fewer animals in shelters and being euthanized.

If you really want a Labradror / Golden Retriever mix, do what I did and search Petfinder.com until you find one. There are countless dogs who need homes there. Don’t pay money to puppy mills and back yard breeders.

I had a black lab and I had a golden for about 14 years. Golden’s really are VERY smart. They were both great dogs. I imagine a mix of the two would be great too

  36. Caloyon 19 Nov 2011 at 1:28 pm

I have one and he a very energetic and every loyal I think that he is more than a labrador rather than a golden retriever.
