Teach your cat to jump through hoops
(NC)—Rick Parker, professional cat trainer, offers these step-by-step instructions on teaching your cat how to jump through a hoop:
1. Bring two tables or surfaces similar in height close together.
2. Shake the treat bag to get your cat’s attention.
3. Hold out a hoop, such as a knitting hoop, between the two surfaces.
4. Tap with your finger where you are going to place the treat- the surface opposite to where the cat is sitting.
5. Your cat will walk through the hoop to taste that treat.
6. If the cat tries to go around the hoop, do not reward the cat, reposition it to its first mark and move the hoop closer to the cat so that they must go through it.
7. Try again by holding the treat in front of their face.
8. Repeat this step several times.
9. Gradually separate the surfaces wider and wider apart each time.
10. After many repetitions, your cat should now expect a treat every time he or she goes through that hoop and as the gap widens that step will become a jump.
You can have these sessions with your cat about two times a day. Use about 15 - 20 low calorie treats such as Temptation per session.
