If you have an older cat in your home or have a cat that is getting to an age where problems and issues related to senior cat health are a concern, talk to your veterinarian about what you can do to ensure your older cats health and quality of life as they become less active. This may be something as simple as adjusting their diet to a food that caters strictly to the needs of senior cats. It might also include an exercise regimen to keep your cat’s muscles in good health and to make sure they don’t become overweight. Keeping your senior cat up to date on their vaccinations, making sure they’re comfortable and not experiencing any undue stress are also good senior cat health habits to provide to your feline.

Senior Cat Health Issues

Some behaviors and symptoms to look for in your senior cat that can be due to aging or may be an actual senior cat health problem may be that they aren’t as active as they use to be, they sleep more than they use to, aren’t inclined to jump up and down on their favorite chair or sofa, they don’t attempt to jump to higher locations such as desks or countertops, they’re not eating as much food, they are drinking more water, they don’t response when you call which could mean they are experiencing minimal to total hearing loss, noticeable weight loss, they have difficulty grooming themselves, they are having difficulty standing or walking, they do not climb stairs any longer, they are having difficulty urinating or having a bowel movement, there is blood in their urine, they are not using their litter pan and observing a  discoloration or a haze in their eyes.

Addressing Senior Cat Health Issues

If you observe any one of these behaviors or symptoms it’s imperative that you have your cat checked by your veterinarian immediately. Some of these issues may be due to the natural aging process, their bodies are just slowing down or things aren’t working like they use to but there is also a probability that there is a senior cat health medical issue causing these behaviors or symptoms that needs to be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. Just like certain behaviors and symptoms that are looked for regarding kitten health, adolescent cat health and adult cat health, as your cat reaches an older age category, it’s equally important to understand and address senior cat health concerns as soon as possible. As long as your cat is receiving proper veterinary care and problems are diagnosed early and treatments and medicines are rendered in a timely manner, your senior cat can live a long and healthy life.
