(NC)—Rick Parker, professional cat trainer, offers these step-by-step instructions on teaching your cat how to learn his or her name:

1. Take out your Temptations treat bag.

2. Shake the bag in front of your cat.

3. At the same time place a treat on the floor where you want them to focus.

4. Again, shake the bag while treating the cat.

5. Repeat this several times to reinforce the behaviour.

6. You can hold several sessions across which you repeat this step, until it becomes second nature to your cat.

7.  Once your cat has mastered stage one, he or she is ready to move onto the next step.

8. Shake the bag while saying your cat’s name.

9. When the cat looks at you, give them a treat.

10. Start to move further away from your original spot.

11. Continue to shake and call their name.

12. Again, hold several sessions, or until your cat has fully learned this step.

You can have these sessions with your cat about two times a day. Use about 15 - 20 low calorie treats such as Temptation per session.

More tips on how to train your cats and video demonstrations of Parker in action are available online at www.temptations.ca.
