Finding A Good Labrador Mix Dog
One of the most popular dog breeds for pet owners is the Labrador. The reason for this is because labs are loyal, intelligent, and very friendly. They make outstanding companions and are the choice for pet owners around the world. Because of this it makes Labrador mix dogs almost as popular. Labrador mixes like their full bred counterparts are extremely popular. Generally speaking a Labrador mix will keep the qualities of the Labrador breed and balance those qualities against the qualities of the mixed breed.
Examples Of Labrador Mix Breeds That Are Popular
One of the most popular Labrador mix breeds is a lab and golden retriever mix. Both of these breeds’ possess similar qualities, are similar in size, and make outstanding companions. Goldens are among the smartest of all dog breeds and are frequently used as seeing eye dogs because they are so easily trained. A golden and Labrador mix will not have as much hair as a pure bred golden and therefore will be easier to care for and maintain. This makes them very popular and there is a lot of ways to not only find information about but find places to get this mix.
The next lab mix information to look at is the Chow and Labrador mix. The Chow is a very popular breed of dog, but most people do not know there can have a bit of a mean personality. They make good guard dogs, but can be dangerous to have as a family pet. By mixing them with a lab you can temper this and have a pet that is not only great around people but is a good guard dog as well.
My personal favorite, although I might be a bit biased because I have one at home, is the Rottweiler and Labrador mix. Rots are generally views as mean guard dogs but nothing could be farther from the truth. One of the problems with the full bred Rottweilers is that they have a short life expectancy do to problems with their hops and other physical issues. In addition they tend to not be warm and cuddly dogs. Again both of these characteristics can be improved on by mixing with a Labrador. My lab rot mix is extremely friendly to people she knows. Kind to my son, great around the neighborhood kids she will defend the home against strangers with full force, so while not for everyone she is wonderful in my home.

The best lab mix is mine, a labrador doberman. She is loveable, obedient, very intelligent, loyal and has a very protective side to her. I couldnt ask for a better companion. She looks just like a chocolate lab, except she is thinner and has a couple of doberman markings on her. When I decide to get another pet, I will go above and beyond to find another lab dobie mix. I have the loveable loyal lab and the protective dobie all in one.
My husband and I adopted two lab mix puppies from a rescued litter brought up from North Carolina. They are fun but can be challenging. They like to dig and have torn up our garden. We may have to fence off part of the yard if they don’t calm down by the spring. But, we have no regrets. They are affectionate and playful dogs and are keeping us young!The male looks like a small flat-coat retriever and has a beautiful silky coat. The female looks like a small lab/fox terrier. She has an amazing vertical jump and is very athletic.
I also have a lab doberman mix. She is very funny loving, likes to cuddle, loves walks playing outdoors is is super friendly and obietiant. She looks like a chocolate lab but thinner with doberman markings on her face. Shes the best I Love my Ginger !
I have a 6 yr old female Lab/Dobie mix. As in an above post, she looks more like a chocolate lab, but the doberman trait shows in her face, a little. Before she was given to me, she was in training to be a dog that would assist a woman going blind. That person had another, smaller dog, trained for the same purpose and were moving out of state and couldn’t take the bigger dog- my gain.
At first, I was only going to foster Roxy until I found her a home. I have 2 siamese cats (12 and 14 yrs old) and I wasn’t sure how well Roxy would fit into the household, also, had not had a dog since I was a child. After less than a month, I knew I could never giver her up.
She is sweet, intelligent, affectionate, good with the cats and my 12 yr old daughter. She suffers being dressed up in clothing by my daughter. She has sensitive, black dense, nails, but pedi paws took most of the probems with nail clipping away. She understands regular commands as well as ones that are singular to my house, such as “Go sleep with the baby” and she goes upstairs to sleep with my daughter. She loves new toys that squeak and long walks. She isn’t picky about what food she is given and gently nudges my arm when she has to go outside to the bathroom.
She does jump on new people coming into the house, in a happy, frolicking manner, but few people have complained- most tell me to let her go when I try to stop her and stand there until the jumping stops. At 6, she still acts like a puppy.
She never chews furniture or clothing- but I can’t leave any food down, especially chocolate- or it WILL be gone.
In the summer, she has seasonal allergies, but the medication and vet visit for that is much less than routine shots. She has a benign fatty cyst on her side, but I am told that is common in many breeds.
She loves to be hugged and understands a command ‘give kisses’, lol She understands “Where is your NEW toy” and will go and retreive the newest one, not just any toy.
This is a smart mix of dog. She fits well in a home where Siamese cats- one of or even the smartest cat breed, resides. Good with children and has an engageing personality.
She is a member of the household and my friend.
I’ve read the four responses about lab/doberman mixes; where do I get one? They sound like great dogs/friends. Should any of you recheck your posts, can you please tell us the approximate weights? Hoping that they (or, perhaps a runt of the litter) would top out at 45 pounds; does that work? Thanks in advance for any help.
This may have little to do with what you guys are talking about. Im not a breeder or anything like that. Im wondering if it would be a good idea to get a lab puppy, nows hes got a little german shepard in him. Im in the military and going overseas for about a year and wonder if he’ll know me when I get back? Or will he be attached too my Dad? Right now hes 2 months old.Thank you. Michael
I don’t think the puppy will forget you. I had a friend visit from CA this past weekend and she hadn’t been here for 8 months. Roxy seemed to know who she was. Roxy didn’t jump up and down like she does for strangers, but actually curled up on the couch next to my friend, head in her lap. When I call the previous owers, who are out of state and still friends, I put the phone to Rosy’s ear and she makes small barking sounds, as if she recognizes the person’s voice.
Make sure you bond well and when you are away, send toys that you have handled.
Rainey, lab/sharpei , MY ANGEL. I recommend a lab sharpei, although they are not as common. They are very smart,a nd if you can get one with the narrow nose, and big eyes, they look very much like lbradore,,,Rainey was so so loyal and sweet, and preferred people over animals. But she would NEVER BITE. She worried about me when I was gone, and had irritable bowel. She stressed. It did not matter if it was for a day, or 4 days. She would get sad, and not digest food well. At age 9 she got a strange tumor, in her intestine, and she did not show it, until it was 4 inches long,and pressing against her intestinal wall. They removed the tumor, and washed everything out, and put drains in, with antibiotics. She was on baby food for a week,, and then chicken and rice, but after 12 days, she started to not want to eat, and then you could tell the tumor was growing again,and spread. She got peritonitis and it hurt baaad. That was it, it had spread into her lymph and in 4 days she lost a ton of wieght, and her eyes got wide with pain. She looked at me, like , “I am way too young to stop guarding you, but I am in way too much pain.”… she would not go in the car, and I got a vet to come to the house, so we could let her go to heaven on my bed with a tranquilizer, and pain meds. She was almost there anyway she was so tough. I cannot wait to be with her. She was my soulmate. I have no other family.
I am currently hand raising a shar pei black lab mix. His mother died in a car accident when he was 7 days old. He is 4 weeks only today, so I can’t speak to his personality. He and his siblings all have very stocky builds, fat heads, and small ears like shar peis although a few of them did have more pointed snouts. None of them had any wrinkles, but their fur is so soft and fuzzy. As long as I keep him fed regularly, he’s very quiet and not fussy at all. He doesn’t like to relieve himself in his bed, so it’s been fairly easy keeping everything clean.
I also have a lab/shar pei mix, and after reading the first post by Ms. Anderson, I feel compelled to share. My baby girl is almost 5, very affectionate, compassionate, playful, and loyal. She’s great with children of all ages. She’s always got kisses for us on a bad day, loves to cuddle under the sheets, & NEVER has accidents in the house, even if I’ve worked a double & haven’t been home for 15 hours. I’ve never met such a sensitive & caring, human-like animal. She is a true companion. She sleeps a lot, but has energy when it’s playtime, or time for a walk. The only time she’s shown aggression towards another dog was once when a large, aggressive puppy lunged at me, and she backed off immediately upon my command. She is a true lover of all people, listens & understands insanely well, & honestly goes out of her way to make our days a little brighter. Downfalls, she is very emotional, refuses to eat until both me & my fiancee are home & she gets depressed if one of us aren’t home for an extended period of time. She also has skin allergies, which I easily clear up with generic benodryl. I can’t imagine a life without my precious shar pei/lab mix! she was the PERFECT choice!
I have a 10 month Dobie/Lab mix. He is a beautiful red with disticnt doberman markings and body style and behavior of a lab.
I also have a black catahoula and they are best friends.
He, Harley, always gets compliments at the dog park and he is huge although they still think they are little lap dogs (ugh)
