Facts About Yorkie Puppy Care

Published by Jennifer at 10:59 pm under Dog Breeds, Puppies, Puppy Care, Yorkies

Almost everyone will agree Yorkies are some of the most adorable dogs. They are one of the few breeds who are actually cuter as they get older. If you want to adopt one of these bundles of energy there are a few things you need to know about Yorkie puppy care. Bundle of energy is an understatement. These babies seem to have a never ending supply of bubbly, bouncy, energy. For many people, this energy is too much for them to deal with. If you are looking for a docile lap dog, you might want to consider another breed.

Newborn Yorkie puppy care is much like care for any other type of puppy. They need attention, food, water, and lots of grooming. Yorkies have beautiful long coats that require daily attention. A thorough brushing is needed every day to prevent matting. Starting the puppy out at a very young age will help the puppy learn to tolerate this activity.

Yorkies are a member of the toy breeds and are subject to bouts with low blood sugar. Because of their high energy level their small bodies sometimes expend more energy than they take in. This can be a serious problem if not given immediate attention. A small amount of sweet water or syrup will usually be all that is needed but if your puppy does not respond you need to make a trip to the vet. This problem usually is not a threat after twelve weeks of age.

Because of their demure stature and high energy level you need to take care that your Yorkie puppy gets enough to drink. Dehydration can happen quickly and needs immediate attention. If your puppy is playing hard he will need to drink water frequently. It is extremely important for you to have a fresh supply of water available at all times.

Yorkie Puppy Care And Training

For some unknown reason Yorkies don’t realize they are little dogs. They often exhibit stubborn behavior especially when you are trying to house train them. They are one of the more difficult breeds to train and they will require a lot of patience on your part. A very young Yorkie is probably not going to learn very fast. Most people have more success when the dog is five to six months old. If you are exercising proper Yorkie puppy care you will not spank your puppy when he has an accident. Instead try scolding him in a rough voice. Most puppies want to please their master and it makes them unhappy when they know they have disappointed you. Since you are dealing with a baby you should not expect too much too soon. It is also important to note that treats should be given when your puppy goes where you want him to. This will help to reinforce his positive behavior.

You need to understand that Yorkie puppy care will sometimes try your patience. The first year of life is usually the most difficult but their temperament will get better as they mature. With patience and understanding you will find that the Yorkie is one of the most lovable dogs you can own.

Yorkies are adorable dogs that need a lot of attention, care and love…. However reading the above comments I fear that these people don’t realize that. Owning a Yorkie is not like having a pit bull - its not just saying óh how cute’ etc. it is sharing your time (lots of it) to assure that your new companion/pet is healthy and happy.

My son got me a Yorkie, he bought it in Ky and I live in Florida so my daughter which lives in Ky kept it for me for about a month until I could come in an get him(my daughter has 2 kids and a Lab that would get annoyed by the playfulness) so it was confusing I’m sure to him of where his home was but the main problem I have with him he bites, he won’t clamp down but you can’t enjoy him for his teeth,he will bite the back of my arm,my sides, hands. I will play ball with him, he will bring it back but as soon as he drops it, he’s biting your hand. He was born May lst and my son picked him up on June 29th 2007. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Mine is doing pretty well with a dog door but she still does the excited and scared peeing..is that normal?

I have a 13 week old yorkie pup and a 3 yr. old daughter. They get along great. They both have alot of energy and can get it out with eachother. So far he is doing very well with his training but it does take a lot of time patience. He is a very smart loving dog and I would recomend that if you want a sweet smart cuddely dog, get a yorkie.

While Yorkies do require a lot of time it can be very rewarding. I have a 8 month old Yo-Chon, I adopted at 4 months, and she is a bundle of energy & I just adopted a 4 year old female and she is calm, very loving and loves to cuddle, so don’t limit yourself to just getting a puppy. Also, don’t think you can’t have a Yorkie because someone else in your family has big dogs…my husband has 2 AmStafs and my Yorkie & Yo-Chon dominate them.

I have a 7 month yo-chon which I got for Christmas, he is very Spirited so his name of course is “Spirit”.
I am having trouble with house breaking him, he won’t go out on a lead, nor will he go out with anyone including me. What can I do?
He seems very timid, he won’t come to me or anyone else. I really LOVE him and want to help him over come this. How do I get him to respond to me and come to me?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

  37. myon 09 Jan 2008 at 7:41 am

I just lost a puppy, the mother’s weight is 1.5 kg. the puppy is large but was delivered through c-section. Don’t know what went wrong as I left my dog for their care and visited everyday.
First stud was Nov 5 and the second was on the 7th. I left my dog to the vet’s care on Jan 2 so they can look after her cause I’m at work and was afraid that she might labor without anybody watching, I called and visited everyday and anticipated my little puppy’s arrival. On Jan 6 I went to see her at around 2 pm. she is still eating like a horse, They even made an ultrasound and said that the puppy is still alive and the heartbeat is strong. 12 midnight they called and said that the puppy was weak and did not made it. The puppy was big around 5″. So I really don’t know what went wrong.

  38. R&Con 10 Jan 2008 at 11:30 pm

Sounds like Parvo.. Don’t get me wrong but keeping puppies at the vet never seems to work out well. I understand you had to leave the female.. We have 5 yorkies.. yes 5.. no i’m not a freak just love them to death.. best “dog” I have ever had. I sometimes fail to say dog because they don’t act like one.. I think they are really people inside a dog’s body

I have a yorkie and she is so stubborn!! We’ve had her for a month and 1/2 and she’ll bark at anything. She’s a sweetheart and we love her so.

  41. Lindseyon 17 Feb 2008 at 7:08 pm

I had a yorkie until she was 12 years old. Yorkies tend to have “big dog syndrome” They think they are big and can take anything. A Dogo Argentino came into our yard, and being protective over my mom, barked at the dog and got herself killed. It’s been three years and we are still not over it. Yorkies are such a loveable breed and are i love everthing aboutt them. We are finally ready to get another one, which she is coming in 6 days. We have a big fence around our yard now, and she will never leave my site! BE CAREFUL!!!

My mom just lost a fox terrier due to old age. She had that dog for 17 years and it tore her apart when patchy ( fox terrier) passed away. 2 Months later they found a tumor in my 16 year old cat (sassy) brain, so we had to put her down. Our family was sad that we lost 2 of the closest things around us.
One week later my friend’s Lhasa apso gave birth to Yorkie mixes. I called my mom up two weeks later and told her for mothers day Im going to get her a baby boy yorkie mix. Its the first time I really saw her happy after the two loses. So April 25 Im going to bring home Grady boy our yorkie mix. Mom cant wait to meet her baby boy 8]

  47. Corkyon 02 Apr 2008 at 3:09 am

My new yorkie is at my house right now. He came home today with my husband as a surprise to me. Apparently his human Mommy passed away and he was being kept in a cage by family friends that were finally able to convince the daughter that he needed a new home with a new fmaily to love and care for him!
I’ve not been able to see him yet, as I am in the next state over assisting with my Dad and a family illness of our own, but I will tomorrow!

  48. Cherylon 23 Apr 2008 at 3:45 am

I JUST BOUGHT A YORKIE THATS 4 WEEKS OLD. THE LADY I BOUGHT HER FROM SAID THAT SHE HAS TEETH BUT… WHEN SHE WAS TEETHING ON MY FINGER I DIDNT FEEL ANY TEETH, JUST THE OUTLINES OF THEM COMING IN. BUT, I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO CARE FOR HER, AND WHATS SOMETHINGS THAT SHE CAN EAT WITHOUT GETTING SICK. IT WOULD REALLY BREAK MY HEART IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO HER! BUT, I HAVE SOME PUPPY CHOW AND MY MOM SAYS TO PUT WATER ON IT TO MAKE IT MUSHY. IS THAT GOOD ENOUGH? CAN ANYBODY PLEASE REPLY AS TO WHAT U THINK I SHOULD DO… THANX!

  54. BrittanyandSquirton 08 Jun 2008 at 4:46 am

to SK-New.Yorkie.Owner: First of all nobody reputable would sell any dog before 8 weeks of age, and most should not be sold/taken from mother before 12 weeks. To feed your baby you should buy a mild-formula canned dog food (not chunky) something like A/D formula from the vet. Call your veterinarian and tell them the situation and ask waht should I be feeding.

Yorkies need food down 24/7 (hard food - tiny kibble, toy/small breed formula) and twice a day of wet canned food such as A/D formula.

    Good luck.

First off, I would NEVERet one of my puppies leave the house until they were at least six weeks old. At 4 weeks, the puppy should just be starting on a dog food mix and start the process of not drinking moms milf. But you geeting her at 4 weeks ounds very early.

I would check with your vet as to what would be the best food for the pup as he or she is only 4 weeks old. You want to make sure that the pup is getting the proper nutrion.

I have a litter that will be a week old this friday. I will NOT let any of mine go until they are at least 6 weeks old and they are eating and drinking

    Best of Luck

    Tony

My little girl is 13 weeks old she is about 1 1/2 lbs. She is fiesty and full of energy. I also have a mini poodle and she gives him a run for his money. She will only sit if she can see the treat in your hand and will try to ignore you until she is able to see what she wants. I love her dearly and the housetraining is a work in progress.

i am looking for a yorkie thats a girl. Is there someone who is giving them for adoption?

  59. Debbieon 15 Jul 2008 at 6:49 am

I’ve never done this before. I don’t have a comment but I would like to ask some questions please.
My yorkie is 9 months old & his name is Riley. I am having trouble with him peeing inside after he has been outside. Plus I would also like to know how old or young can they be to breed them?? I have a girl
whos female just went into heat today, so I was gonna take Riley over tomorrow to let him do his thing, but I was wondering if he can get hurt or if he’s too young?
How can I keep him from barking, & chewing everything in sight? I have to put things up high on everything just so he won’t destroy it.
Please help if you can. Thanks!! Deb

I have one yorkie 6 1/2 years old and am getting a 2 1/2 month old this weekend. My oldest is named Riggins and his brother will be Jacoby. Riggins is the smartest and sweetest dog I have ever owned! He loves to cuddle and play all at the same time. He did require alot of attention at first and still gets vocal when he doesn’t get his way, but I just talk back and he knows who is the boss! I can’t wait to see what his brother will be when he gets older. I wouldn’t have any other small dog!!!!
