One of the most common tropical fish diseases shows up as white spots on the skin of your fish. These are fungal diseases, and will usually show up after your fish is already weakened from stress. Monitor your fish closely after you introduce them into their new tank.

There are several signs to watch for that may indicate tropical fish diseases. If you notice that your fish has bulging eyes, open sores or ulcers, chances are your fish has some kind of bacterial disease. There are other signs as well, but these are the most common. In many cases, this type of disease needs to be treated with antibiotic medication.

If one or more of your fish appear to be rubbing their bodies on various objects in the tank, this could indicate the presence of a parasitic disease. The rubbing and scraping that the fish are doing is an attempt to remove the parasites that are trying to eat through their skin. If they are successful, eventually they will get inside the fish and kill it by eating away at the internal organs. A bath in some type of salt solution will sometimes take care of this problem.

The last on our list of tropical fish diseases are viral diseases. This is one of the most common diseases in many types of fish. It will often show up as swelled white spots on the skin. The treatment for this type of disease can be difficult because it’s hard to identify the specific virus. The most important thing to do is remove the infected fish from the tank immediately. Viruses can quickly spread to the other fish in the tank. Place the infected fish in a separate container and keep the environment as clean as possible. Over time, the virus should run its course.

You will need to make sure that the breeding tank is stocked with plenty of plants, these plants will not only make the fish comfortable they will also help keep the water clean and oxygenated.

Female tropical fish aren’t ready to breed until they are approximately four months old. This is an important fact to keep in mind when you are watching your young fries grow up, you will want to separate the females from their male siblings before they are four months old.

The gestation period of the average live bearing tropical fish is four weeks. This is good because it means that you won’t have long to wait to see if your fish were able to mate.  One of the odd things about female tropical fish is that they are able to save sperm within their bodies. What this means is that your female fish can have multiple births from a single breeding.

Hermit Crabs

Although they aren’t technically a tropical reef fish, hermit crabs are a wise addition to any reef aquarium. In a natural habitat, crabs and lobsters are a type of coral reef janitor, as they keep the water and the coral clean.  When you are looking for a hermit crab to put in your reef tank you need to make sure you select a type of hermit crab that is compatible with both your reef, and your other tropical reef fish. Some types of hermit crabs that are well suited to reef tanks include Halloween Hermit Crabs, Electric Orange Hermit Crab and Dwarf Red Tip Hermit Crabs.

Lawnmower Blenny

Another tropical reef fish that does an excellent job keeping your reef clean is the Lawnmower Blenny. This tropical reef fish can be found swimming in reefs in the Indio-pacific and grows to be approximately five inches long. There is nothing the Lawnmower Blenny likes better then to eat the string and hair algae growing in your aquarium.

Golden Tonga Blenny

The golden scales of the Golden Tonga Blenny appeal to fish lovers all over the world. The Golden Tonga Blenny is an herbivore that likes to graze on the rocks at the bottom of your aquarium. This tropical reef fish likes to dine on spirulina algae and marine algae. The Golden Tonga Blenny does very well when you feed it dry seaweed and live macro-algae.

Red Sea Mimic Blenny

A Red Sea Mimic Blenny is a tropical reef fish that would suit any reef aquarium.  The Red Sea Mimic Blenny is a lovely herbivore, which is 4.2 inches long, and adds a brilliant splash of color to an other wise dull world. Contrary to the name the Red Sea Mimic Blenny is not a red fish the name comes from where the fish originates, the Red Sea. The Red Sea Mimic Blenny is a stunning shade of electric blue with a few streaks of pale yellow that runs the length of its spine. A Red Sea Mimic Blenny requires a tank that is at least 30 gallons. The Red Sea Mimic Blenny has a happy expression on its face that will bring a smile to your face.
