Dog agility is a class designed to showcase a dog’s agility, obedience, and trust in their handler. To do this the handler Puts their dog through a pre-arranged course of obstacles that include tunnel, A-frames, weaving through poles, jumping over jumps, and portable agility dog teeter totters. At lower level shows and with young dog the handler uses a collar and leash to guide the dog over the portable agility dog teeter totter and other agility obstacles, as the dog improves the handler removes the leash and uses vocal commands and body language to instruct the dog. Most dog agility classes are timed events. Everyone form competitors, dogs, to the fans watching the show, love watching the dog agility classes.

Because obstacles such as the A-frame and portable agility dog teeter totter are difficult for large breeds of dogs to maneuver most of the dogs found competing in dog agility classes are small or medium sized dogs.

One of the best things about training a dog to compete in agility classes is that many of the obstacles, including the portable agility dog teeter totter, can be built in your own garage. Once you have built the obstacles all you have to do is set them up in your yard and you’ll be ready to start honing your dog’s skills.

If you decided to build your own dog agility coarse at home to use for practice make sure you use light weight materials that are easy to move, carry and store, but not so flimsy that they will break or collapse when your dog is on them. They will last longer if you are able to store them somewhere, like a shed or garage, where they won’t be constantly exposed to the damaging affects of weather.

When you are constructing a portable agility dog teeter totter, there are a few guidelines you need to follow. Make sure that the portable agility dog teeter totter is the right size, a regulation portable agility dog teeter totter should be between ten and twelve feet long. The portable agility dog teeter totter’s plank needs to pivot on its support. The portable agility dog teeter totter needs to be designed so that when it descends it doesn’t descend so quickly the dog is jarred off of it. When training your dog to walk across the portable agility dog teeter totter be patient. Don’t encourage your dog to race across the portable agility dog teeter totter at full speed until you are sure it is comfortable with the obstacle.

When this writer was growing up, Thanksgiving had a lot of traditions attached to it. You had at least five starches on your plate, you had the day off school and you watched television. My Dad would watch football, but when the evening came, we would watch The Wizard of Oz (1939). Now, the Wizard has floated away to cable. But there is a new show to take up where the Wizard left off – the Philadelphia dog show.

Taped The Weekend Before

This is not a live event, but edited to a more digestible two-hour treat. The Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Show lasts about four days. It is considered in the third most prestigious dog show in the nation, topped only by Westminster and the AKC/Eukaneuba National Championships. The event is taped the weekend before (during the same time as this writer’s birthday, coincidently).

Although you can possibly find out in advance which dog won Best In Show in the Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Show, that kind of spoils the surprise. However, this writer lives in the Philadelphia area and loves dogs. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the wrong dog as winning in the 2007 show. The website of Purina, the corporate sponsor, also reported the wrong dog as winning Best In Show. So, there are still surprises to be had.

Something For Everyone

One of the good things about the Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Show is that you do not have to know much about dogs in order to figure out what’s going on. There isn’t any tricky plot to follow or key plays to miss while you are grabbing a second piece of pumpkin pie. If you’ve ever seen a beauty pageant, then you pretty much know what to expect with a dog show.

Dogs have some of the most flexible genes in the animal kingdom, which humans have used to exploit in strange, beautiful and comical ways. There are over 150 breeds recognized by the AKC, and they all trot out here. The broadcast also explains the history of the breeds, and behind the scenes looks at the Philadelphia National Dog Show.

The broadcast was lucky enough to not only have an expert dog show commentator in David Friel, but also has the talents of comedian and dog-lover John O’Hurley. NBC decided ten years ago to air the Philadelphia Dog Show as a one-time event. However, when the ratings came in, NBC decided they had a new holiday tradition on their hands. The Philadelphia National Dog Show is the most watched dog show in America.

The show typically includes more than three thousand dogs and about one hundred and fifty breeds of dogs. The dogs compete in groups such as terrier, herding, toy, non-sporting, sporting, working and hound.

The Kennel Club of Philadelphia

The winners of the different groups eventually end up competing with each other for the title of best of show. The National dog show is hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and occurs on a yearly basis. The show is presented by Purina and is considered to be the most watched dog show in the United States. The national dog show is seen by more than twenty million people on television each year. The show is broadcast on television for two hours and is considered to be one of the most prestigious dog shows.

The Kennel Club of Philadelphia has put on dog shows for over one hundred and twenty five hears. The national dog show is sanctioned by the American Kennel Club which is the major registry of purebred dogs in the United States and is considered to be the largest registry for dogs in the world.

The Kennel Club of Philadelphia along with its predecessor kennel clubs have been putting on dog shows since 1879 and the Kennel Club of Philadelphia is older than the American Kennel Club. The first show presented by the Kennel club when it took the name of The Kennel Club of Philadelphia occurred in 1912 and was chosen to be a member of the American Kennel club in 1913. The dog shows presented by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia were canceled during the Great Depression. Mr. Burland is the show chairman of the Kennel club of Philadelphia and he has been involved in the breeding of dogs as well as exhibiting them for more than thirty years and is an avid fan of the national dog show.

Purina

Purina is proud to present the national dog show and is considered to be one of the leading companies for pet food and pet care products. They actively promote pet health, research and the idea that people should be responsible for the health of their pets and for treating them in a positive way. If you enjoy dogs, watch the national dog show the next time the show is on television.

If you’re considering training your dog to compete in agility competitions, there are several things you’ll need to consider. Obviously, some dogs will be better at it than others, but almost any dog can be trained to do it successfully. When thinking about how to start training a dog for agility, many people wonder how old the dog must be before they begin. The first thing you should realize is that many of the the things you will be teaching your dog are things they love to do naturally. As soon as you get your puppy home and begin playing with him you can begin working on some agility training. Even if you don’t plan on participating in competitions, agility training can greatly benefit your dog.

Getting Started

The best method for how to start training a dog for agility as a puppy is simply by playing with him. Everyone knows how much puppies love to play, so that won’t be a problem. The thing you want to do is gear the playing toward basic agility skills that you can build on later. Since puppies do not have the attention span or the stamina of older dogs, you’re going to want to keep your training sessions short. You also want to stay away from the more dangerous obstacles such as jumps and things that are more than a few inches high. The last thing you want to do is injure your puppy unnecessarily. Next, we will look at some basic training techniques that will prepare your puppy for the more advanced stuff later on.

Obstacles

How to start training a dog for agility as a puppy is by using the most basic obstacles. A small box that is just a few inches high can be useful for many different purposes. You can begin climbing exercises and practice basic commands this way. Most agility courses include tunnels and weave poles. These are great tools for how to start training a dog for agility. The nice thing is that they are completely safe for use with puppies.

Treats or rewards should be used in any kind of dog training, especially with puppies. Obviously, your dog will want to do the things that please you if knows he will get something out of it too. When using tunnels, your puppy may be afraid or hesitant to enter at first. If he has a favorite ball, you can try rolling it through the tunnel and see if he will follow. Make sure to reward him, even if he only goes part of the way in. then you can work on sending him all the way through.

The same principle can be used when dealing with the weave poles. Take the same favorite ball and weave it through the course the same way you want your puppy to go. When he follows it through, reward and praise him at the other end of the course. Remember that your puppy will be a bit more clumsy than an older dog. As he progresses in his training, place a small stick in his mouth as goes through the weave poles. This will get him used to the spacing that is required in order to avoid bumping into the poles.

This is only the first step in how to start training a dog for agility. However, these basic exercises will give your dog a solid foundation on which to build future training.

In the United States the major governing body that oversees many of the purebred dog breeds is the American Kennel Club. Most of the other countries in the world don’t belong to the American Kennel Club. Most countries register their purebred dog breeds with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale is the main organization involved with European dog shows.

What Is The Fédération Cynologique Internationale
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale manages and oversees the registration of many purebred dog breeds throughout the world. There are currently 80 countries, including Costa Rica, Greece, and Finland, who are members of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and it recognizes different purebred dog breeds. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale was created in 1911 and the founding countries are Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, and the Netherlands.

The interesting thing about the Fédération Cynologique Internationale is that the dog breeds owner country is responsible for recording and recognizing the characteristics of the breed, for example Germany is responsible for keeping track of the breed characteristics and standards of the Doberman Pinscher. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale divides the dog breeds into ten categories; Terriers, Retrievers (sometimes called water dogs), Sheep and cattle dogs, Sighthounds, Pinschers and Schnauzers, Primitive types, Dachshunds, Toy dogs (also called Companion dogs), Pointing dogs, and Scenthounds.

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale And The European Dog Show

Like the American Kennel Club the Fédération Cynologique Internationale uses dog shows to help promote the quality of the purebred dog breeds it promotes, many of these shows are European dog shows. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale has one member assigned to each country.

Each individual country is responsible for training their own dog show judges and issuing pedigrees to the purebred dogs registered in the country. Each country is expected to host dog shows and working trials were dogs from the same breed have an opportunity to compete against one another. Like the American Kennel Club dogs are awarded points when they achieve a best in show. When a dog earns enough points the dog is given the title of International Beauty and/or working dog champion.

Crufts Dog Show

The Crufts dog show isn’t just another European dog show. Crufts has the distinction of being the largest dog show in the world, a record recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Dog lovers who attend the European dog show can expect to see approximately 23,000 dogs, of these 23,000 dogs over 1,000 of them will be from over seas.

The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship is one of the biggest events on the dog show calendar each year. This show is similar to many others in its format and actual competition, but it is also quite unique in many other ways. Let’s take a look at what makes the Eukanuba dog show so special.

What Makes It Unique?

There are several things that make the Eukanuba dog show stand out from the rest. Out of all of the other AKC sanctioned competitions, this is the only show that is organized and presented only by the AKC. It also offers more cash prizes that any other major dog show, with a total purse of well over $200,000.

The Eukanuba dog show is also the only major show where the entries are by invitation only. The invitations are handed out as follows. The top twenty-five dogs in every breed and variety that is recognized by the AKC are invited. This is based on the results of a specific qualification period from the previous year. Every Best In Show winner and Bred-By-Exhibitor champion from that period is also invited. The final group that receives invitations is the winner of each breed’s specialty shows from the previous year.

The Eukanuba dog show also takes some time to recognize the people behind the dogs with the Breeder of the Year Award. This award salutes the accomplishments of certain individuals who have impacted various specific breeds. Another unique event offered by the Eukanuba dog show is the annual AKC Meet the Breeds. This is an opportunity for people to learn more about the dogs they have grown accustomed to watching in these competitions. Various informative presentations are given on specific breeds to educate the public. This is also the only major American dog show whose winners are invited to enter Crufts, which is the world’s largest dog show and is held at The Kennel Club in England.

As far as the actual competition, the Eukanuba dog show is set up much like the other major competitions. A Best of Breeds winner is chosen from each recognized breed. These winners then move on to the group competition. There are seven groups, including sporting, hounds, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, and herding. A winner from each group is then chosen to move on to the Best in Show competition.

The Eukanuba dog show is one of the most popular and prestigious events of the year. Just getting into this event is an accomplishment. If you want to see a competition between the absolute best dogs in the country, then this is one show that should not be missed.

Just like for humans, agility training for dogs makes them more confident, increases their speed, and increases their overall flexibility, while doing things on their feet. Agility training for dogs is one of the fastest growing sports for dogs in the world. This relatively new dog sport is not only fun for the dogs but fun for the owners as well.

History of Agility Training for Dogs

Agility training for dogs started sometime in the late 1970s in England, where it somewhat copied horse show jumping. Both agility training for dogs and horse jumping build a strong bond between the owner and the animal. They also help to develop strategy and teamwork. You win an agility event with your dog by completing the course in the fastest time with the fewest number of faults. It is very similar again to horse jumping when the horse knocks down one of the poles of the fence.

Positive Benefits for Dogs

Another benefit of agility training for dogs is the mental effect it has on shy dogs and owners. Both often show a renewed confidence after successfully negotiating an agility obstacle course. Many dogs improve their coordination dramatically by completing the basic training exercises used to teach jumping and ramp work.

For those hyperactive dogs, agility training provides them with a method of releasing some of that extra energy in a positive manner. The mental workout for the dog is often greater for the dog than the physical one. The teamwork that the sport builds between the owner and the animal builds a level of communication between the two that is very similar to how humans communicate.

To make a great team in agility training, your dog and yourself must be in perfect sync, since there is no leash or collar allowed on a agility course. The order of obstacles is different on each course and the pathway twists and turns, so the dog, to be successful, has to learn a whole new vocabulary.

Puppies

Puppies can start training with regular walks through the agility courses as early as four months. As they get older, conditioning walks of two miles or longer are recommended. Dogs must be trained not to rush the obstacles as not to injure themselves by falling from an a-frame or a dog walk. Ramps have cross-laths to help with traction when the dog sprints up the ramp.

For the dog who is afraid of heights, the owner will coax through the uncertainty and by doing so will help his dog and himself.

Good Luck in agility training your dog!

While dog and owner are the two most important components of any dog show competition, there are other factors that influence the success of the pair. These items not only increase the aesthetic value and positive personality characteristics, they also make it possible for the dog show to occur period. Dog show supplies are important for both the individual participants and for the event itself; without them, the animals would rarely be able to live up to their owners’ expectations, and the show itself would be unable to truly test the physical abilities and qualities of the dogs.

The Best Dog Show Supplies for the Best Dogs

For individual dogs, dog show supplies help the animals fulfill their potentials. Some are used on-site, while others are used throughout training. Grooming and dental supplies are integral for the physical appearance of dogs; their coats must shine, their fur must be soft, their teeth must be white and their nails must be clipped. Any deviations from the breed standard will never result in a win.

These tools should be used at home as well; while grooming before a show may be intense, the dogs should be given adequate attention even when they are not in the ring. An unhealthy dog will never be a winner, and these animals deserve to be treated the same regardless of whether they are competing or not. Collars and leashes are other dog show supplies that are equally used in the home as well; however, competitive collars and leashes are often fancier, and supplement the physical qualities of the dogs. While specific training collars may be used while the dog is learning proper posture and trotting form, these tools would seem out-of-place in a show.

Other important individual dog show supplies include travel crates, blankets, food dishes and equipment carrying containers. A professional show dog will travel the country and perhaps the world with his or her owner. Traveling can be a grueling endeavor for any animal if the proper precautions and considerations are not followed. A dog should always be kept in a crate during long road trips or flights, and the crate should be comfortable, filled with soft blankets and pillows, and more than enough food and water. For the owners, dog show supplies should be ordered and protected in specialized bins and racks, for both easy traveling and easy access during the shows.

Dog shows themselves require their own specialized dog show supplies. Obstacle courses and agility races are filled with equipment, including tires and poles, hoops and ramps. Even the conformation ring, with its platforms and ropes, must be planned well in advance. Without these tools, the dog show could never happen, and all of the preparation on the part of the dogs and owners would be for nothing.

Every dog at a dog show dreams of bringing home dog show rosettes. Rosettes are a certain type of prize ribbon. There are a variety of different kinds of ribbon dogs win at dog shows; dog show rosettes are not the only kind of ribbon to be won at a dog show.

Flat Ribbons

Flat ribbons are just that: strips of ribbon, cut at either end with pinking shears, with printing, usually gold, stamped over the smooth, flat ribbon. These are the least expensive prizes, giving to the puppies at their first show so they get to bring something home. These flat ribbons are available in 40 different colors.

Peak Top Ribbons

A peak-top ribbon is a flat ribbon with a pointed end. The end has a hole punched in it and a silk cord drawn through the hole. Peak top ribbons are inexpensive and easy to print on in gold stamped letters and graphics.

One variation on the peak top ribbon is the peak overlay, where a wider ribbon is fused to a narrower ribbon in a contrasting color. When the ink of the print is the same color as the slightly larger ribbon, the ribbon gives the impression that the letters are cut out and showing from underneath.

Badge Ribbons

Badge ribbons are flat printed ribbons available in badge size. They are usually used for dog show hosts, judges, and presenters, to name just a few of the people who wear badge ribbons. The badge ribbon is meant more as a name tag or identifying characteristic than a prize ribbon.

Dog Show Rosettes

Satin dog show rosettes represent the crowning glory of award ribbon art. Rosettes are usually hand made of beaded edge satin in just about any color you can imagine, and printed in gold. Dog show rosettes come with anywhere from one to three streamers. For something different, experiment with using two different colored satin ribbons for the rosette and streamers.

Customized Dog Show Rosettes

With specialty ribbons, your rosettes really become something unique. Consider making your next dog show rosette out or striped ribbon, rainbow ribbon, or glitter edged ribbon for a really different look.

For any dog show, however, you must have the traditional blue ribbon for the Best Of dogs. Red and Yellow ribbons provide something for everyone on the medal stand, and participants will treasure their purple Participant ribbon while Runners-up get a beautiful green dog show rosette, all printed in gold.

A conformation dog show, as the name suggests, is a show in which expert judges evaluate dogs according to how well they conform to their specific breed standards. These shows are often associated with specific kennel clubs, and are some of the most recognized dog shows in the world due to their prestige and media coverage. While obstacle courses and agility races are a lot more exciting, there is much more money involved for breeds and owners alike in conformation shows. The first conformation show was held almost 150 years ago in England, and since then, many new rules, standards and even breeds have been added to the mix. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, first held in 1877, is the most prestigious dog show in the United States, and one of the most important platforms for pedigree dogs in the sport.

Teaching New Dogs Old Tricks

Originally intended to showcase gun dogs, including pointers and setters, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has been held annually in New York City for over 130 years, and is the second oldest continuously-held American sporting competition. While the show now uses American Kennel Club breed standards and judges, the AKC itself was not founded until 1884.

The Westminster Kennel Club was the first club admitted into the AKC. While the first shows focused on working dogs, contemporary shows are much more interested in the aesthetic qualities of the animals, including their coloring, posture, grooming and other physical criteria. The AKC is one of the prominent record-keeping agencies, and bloodlines and ancestral trees also play a large role in how the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show operates. The new two-day, two-hour format is very conducive to television coverage, and over 2500 dogs, and over 150 breeds, compete each year.

The American Kennel Club only recognizes certain dog breeds; many less prominent breeds recognized by other international associations are not included in their records. Dogs must be registered with the AKC in order to compete in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show; however, new breeds are added occasionally, allowing for the art of breeding, and the creation and maintenance of lesser breeds, to continue.

Participants must also already be reigning champions for their breeds, a requirement initiated in 1992 to curb entry numbers. Most dogs are handled by professional dog handlers in the ring, although this practice is not mandatory; the breeder or owner is allowed to show his or her own dog, but usually skilled handlers have the better techniques needed to highlight each dog’s individual strengths.

Beyond the show ring, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is a lucrative business for breeders and owners. Winners are often retired, but their work is far from done. Former winners can fetch large fees for breeding; since most kennel clubs do trace family trees, the offspring of former champions are prized possessions. Winning Best in Show or Best in Group is only the beginning of a show dog’s career.
