Qualities Of A Golden Retriever Lab Mix

While all dogs have their own unique attributes, with most breeds you can predict certain things. Beagles almost always have a ton of energy, hounds are usually much more relaxed, and the list goes on.  The same thing can be said for a golden retriever lab mix.

The first you will almost always find in a golden retriever is a great intelligence.  This carries over into the mix as well.  Labradors are one of the smarter breeds around, and golden retrievers are even smarter than that.  Consistently retrievers will rank very high in intelligence exams, so this mix generally will also be extremely smart.  This can be both a boon and hindrance.  If you are looking for a very smart dog than this mix will most certainly fall into that category.  If you are looking for a dog that is not as smart and perhaps a bit less curious, then maybe you should not look at this mix.

A second quality that is very predictable in a golden retriever lab mix is their temperament.  Unlike others like a lab chow mix, you can expect the temperament of a golden retriever lab mix will almost always be very mild and attentive.  Lab chows can be extremely unpredictable; with some being like their lab parents and being very mild, will others can be extremely hostile and uncontrollable.

There are many other features of the mixing of these two breeds that make them desirable.  There size will generally be predictable as both dogs are of similar stature.  Coloration and shape will also be predictable, especially between a retriever and a yellow lab.  If both these dogs have qualities you like, then you may want to consider looking at a golden retriever lab mix.

A labrador retriever and chow mixed breed dog.

I have always wanted to get a chow but never could afford one.  Yes I had heard how finicky the breed can be, but I foolishly ignored those and sought one out anyway.  I could not find one, but I was able to find a lab chow mix at the local SPCA.   I immediately adopted the lab chow mix and named him Buddy.  What happened after that was more my fault than his, but still I will never be able to get a lab chow mix again.

The Story Of Buddy And Me – A Lab Chow Mix Gone Wrong

It all started when he was he a puppy and things just never got better.  I know that puppies chew and bite, and that lab chow mixes can sometimes do this more then other breeds so I thought I was aware what I was in for.   Little did I know how much he would end up biting and chewing or else I would have never got him.  Most of my furniture was ruined within a couple months and it seemed like I always had band aids on my hands.   This was only the beginning however.

In addition to chewing up my furniture and biting me, Buddy was becoming more and more mean to those around me.  It became harder and harder to invite friends over and I felt like I was under siege from this little lab chow mix.   Maybe it was my fault because I did not discipline him properly, but I truly had thought that I could handle it.  It became harder and harder as Buddy became more and more demanding and then more and more hostile to people I had over.

The worst of it came when I decided to have a dinner party one evening just before Buddy turned one.  I invited all my friends and at first everything was fine.  As more people started to come by I noticed Buddy becoming more and more agitated.  I decided it would be best if I took away from the situation and placed him into my bedroom.  Looking back this whole thing was a mistake and at this point I wished I had got a golden retriever lab mix or anything more manageable.  Well, one of my friends later that night decided to put his coat in my bedroom not knowing that Buddy was in there.  When he when in, Buddy lunged at and bit him.

My friend thankfully was not seriously injured, but I had enough.  I decided at the point to surrender Buddy, and to this day I do not blame him.  All I can say is think long and hard before you get a lab chow mix because you want to be sure that you can handle it.

Regardless of what kind of dog you are looking for you may want to consider a lab mix puppy.   The only type of dog that really does not work for a lab mix puppy are dogs from the toy category.  In general these dogs are desirable because of their small size, but when you mix them with a Labrador they will no longer retain that tiny size.  However, just about every other class of dog will work in for a lab mix puppy.

The next breed that you may want to consider mixing with a Labrador is the Rottweiler.   Rotts have a bad reputation because they are used as fighting dogs.  In fact for the most part they are very good to their owners and their families.  They are also incredibly loyal, even for a dog, and have been known to throw themselves into danger without fear or pause when defending those close to them.   When they are mixed with lab, their aggressive nature is tempered a bit as is their size.  In addition, labs are very intelligent dogs and the mix of these two breeds is usually very smart.  This leads to dogs that are very smart and loyal, perfect if you are looking for not only a family pet but perhaps a guard dog as well.

The last breed of lab mix puppy to look at is the Siberian Husky.  Huskies are generally not the most social of dogs towards humans, but they are loyal and do make good guard dogs.  In addition they are tireless workers and have boundless amounts of energy.  Puppies of this breed are very active and require a careful and attentive owner.  When bred with Labrador they again have a tendency to pick up the better qualities, those being the labs inquisitive and intelligent nature as well as complete dedication to its human family.

As you can see these three breeds all make for a unique dog when bred with a Labrador.  Depending on what you are looking for you may want to seek other combinations as well, but for the most part just about any breed will work with a Labrador.

One of the most popular Labrador mix breeds is a lab and golden retriever mix.  Both of these breeds’ possess similar qualities, are similar in size, and make outstanding companions.   Goldens are among the smartest of all dog breeds and are frequently used as seeing eye dogs because they are so easily trained.   A golden and Labrador mix will not have as much hair as a pure bred golden and therefore will be easier to care for and maintain.   This makes them very popular and there is a lot of ways to not only find information about but find places to get this mix.

My personal favorite, although I might be a bit biased because I have one at home, is the Rottweiler and Labrador mix.   Rots are generally views as mean guard dogs but nothing could be farther from the truth.  One of the problems with the full bred Rottweilers is that they have a short life expectancy do to problems with their hops and other physical issues.  In addition they tend to not be warm and cuddly dogs.  Again both of these characteristics can be improved on by mixing with a Labrador.  My lab rot mix is extremely friendly to people she knows.  Kind to my son, great around the neighborhood kids she will defend the home against strangers with full force, so while not for everyone she is wonderful in my home.
