To his owners, Moby, a 4-year-old Australian Shepherd, was a very healthy, spry dog, so when his veterinarian told them that beneath his thick, reddish-brown coat he had a weight problem, they were a bit shocked.

Apparently, all that baby food licked off the floor, and the lack of activity that came with the two toddlers who had recently joined the family, added about 10 extra pounds on a normally 65-pound dog. The good news is the veterinarian was able to put Moby on a program of diet and exercise, and he was back in perfect shape within a year.

Studies show that pet obesity is an epidemic in this country. According to a 2005 study, approximately 35 percent of American dogs and cats are obese or overweight, and some veterinarians report that they see even higher percentages now.

“I would say that probably more than 50 percent of the animals that we see are overweight,” says Dr. Larry R. Corry, a companion animal practitioner in Georgia and president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). “We say that people are ‘killing their pets with caring.’ They want to give too much food, table scraps and too many treats. They simply don’t realize how unhealthy that can be.”

Obesity can cause a number of health problems, including diabetes and heart problems. Diabetes in animals can be treated successfully with diet and insulin, but treatments are expensive and difficult to undertake successfully with cats. Diabetes treatments require animals to eat on a consistent basis, and cats don’t often enjoy following a schedule. Treating obesity before the animal becomes diabetic is a far simpler solution, Dr. Corry says.

“If we can get pet owners to comply with weight-loss plans, usually we don’t have any problem getting the animal’s weight under control,”Corry says. “Weight-loss diets generally involve specially formulated pet foods or simply a reduction of the amount of food the animal receives.

“Every member of the family has to be in agreement, because if one person is slipping the dog scraps under the table, the program won’t work,” he continues.

For dogs and cats on a diet, one little treat can truly be a diet buster. For example, giving a cat one potato chip may not seem like an extravagant snack, but it’s equivalent to giving an adult human half a cheeseburger or half a candy bar. And giving your cat an ounce of milk is equivalent to eating four and a half cheeseburgers. Giving your pet pooch one hot dog is equivalent to you eating two cheeseburgers. Needless to say, giving a pet table scraps is a sure ticket to pet obesity.

The AVMA has partnered with Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc. to combat obesity by sponsoring the Alliance for Healthier Pets – Obesity Awareness and Prevention Program. The initiative’s primary goal is to educate the public on how to recognize obesity and to suggest simple solutions. Visit www.petfit.com to see examples of how common pet treats translate into major calories. Watch as personal trainer Gunnar Petersen teaches pet owners how to exercise with their pets and then take the “Pet Fit” Challenge.

Sixty three percent of U.S. households own a pet and the most popular animals — dogs and cats — make up 82 percent of all pets, according to the American Pet Products Association.

With all those furry friends, it’s no surprise that pet-friendly design is one of the fastest growing interior decorating trends. From high-end home items to the basics, decorating is literally going to the dogs … and cats. Beyond pet-proofing a home for safety, pet-friendly decorating has an increasing number of animal lovers choosing and incorporating pet-friendly fabrics and building materials into their homes’ decor.

A number of cost-effective ways to maintain a fabulous-looking home are also practical and comfortable for both you and your pet. Here are five tricks of the trade:

Common sense color.
It’s one of the simplest interior design tricks — matching your furniture fabric to your pet’s fur color to help conceal dog and cat hair. For example, if you have a multi-colored pet, opt for a small pattern that closely matches your pet’s coloring. If you have a white poodle or feline, skip the all-black sofa and choose a lighter fabric color. If your heart is still set on black, accessorize with black pillows or a throw blanket. The same holds true if you own a pet with darker fur — the darker your fabric choices, the easier it will be to hide pet fur.

Skip the slipcover.
Thanks to recent advances made in the manufacturing of furniture fabric, there’s no need to hide your couch under an unsightly slipcover in order to protect it from the wear-and-tear of your pet. Look into purchasing furniture made with Crypton, a synthetic textile that’s easy to clean and highly resistant to stains, water and even bacteria. A less expensive option is ultrasuede microfiber. If either of these choices is still out of your price range, make sure your furniture is protected with Scotchgard. However, if you go this route, know that there are still some fabrics to avoid, such as denim, flannel, corduroy and velvet. Each of them has a tendency to hold pet fur.

Pet-friendly paint.
Keeping your walls clean and free of dirt marks can be a feat if you have a pet. Choosing a high-quality, durable paint really does make a difference. Dutch Boy’s Refresh paint, a new paint formulated with exclusive Arm & Hammer odor-eliminating technology, is ideal for pet owners. It provides a beautiful finish that’s also extremely durable, so cleanup of dirt and marks is easy. Plus, it actually removes odors, including pet smells, from the air. You’ll not only have great-looking walls, but a fresh-smelling home, too.

Fitting floors.
Flooring options for pet owners can be tricky because carpet holds stains and odors, and hardwood scratches easily. If you’re looking at replacing your carpeting, there are choices specifically designed for pet owners. One of them, Pet Agree Carpet, claims that it withstands any damage made by a pet. It’s made from a material that traps liquids, such as pet urine, and stops them from soaking through to the carpet padding and floor below.

If you prefer hardwood floors, but don’t want to deal with scratches that can be made by your four-legged friends, think laminate. Today’s laminate flooring, like the new North American collection from Tarkett Residential, is far more durable, and scratch- and indentation-resistant than softer real wood flooring. These surfaces also install faster, are about half the price and still offer a vast choice in unique wood finishes.

Less is more.
Another smart design tip: keep knickknacks and accent pieces to a minimum. Today’s trend in creating clean, streamlined spaces is not only aesthetically appealing, but is ideal for pet owners. A well-thought-out design means you’ll enjoy the benefits of a clutter-free environment while keeping unnecessary, decorative items out of reach of pets’ sweeping tails and curious jaws.

Ensuring you, Fido and Fluffy live harmoniously doesn’t mean you need to spend a bundle, or sacrifice your sense of style. By doing your research, formulating a decorating plan and choosing your materials carefully, you can easily create a home that’s fit for man and beast.

More often than not, you’ll find that your cat’s entertaining antics leave you wondering, “What could she possibly be thinking?” You may never have all the answers, but one of the keys to living a more connected life with your cat starts with understanding.

“Cats can come across as complex because they can’t verbalize what they are feeling,” says Dr. Katrina Warren, host of “Housecat Housecall” presented by Purina Cat Chow. “That’s why it’s up to us to decode what’s going on in their minds, so we have a better idea of what they are trying to tell us through their actions.”

If you find yourself in a feline quandary, you’re not alone. Plenty of cat lovers – and there are at least 82 million housecats in the U.S., according to the American Veterinary Association – are looking for ways to bring harmony into their cat-owning households. Hence the success of shows like “Housecat Housecall,” a reality-based program featuring real cats, real people and real answers, returning to Animal Planet for its second season.

“Sometimes cats act out in response to changes happening in their homes that alter their daily routine,” Dr. Warren says. “Life-changing experiences like having a new baby or moving into a new home can have a huge impact on cat owners, but they can also mean big adjustments for their cats. The goal is to achieve a well-balanced life for both you and your cat, and sometimes that means getting advice from a professional.”

On the show, which airs Saturdays and Sundays, Dr. Warren and her team of cat experts equip cat owners with the tools and knowledge they need to work towards a lasting solution that ensures both the cat and owner are getting the most out of the life they share. Dr. Warren provides answers to some common cat care questions:

Preparing Your Cat for the Arrival of a New Baby

* Make changes to the cat’s routine in advance. If you are no longer going to allow your cat to enter certain rooms or sleep on your bed, start making those changes now.

* Allow your cat to smell the new smells associated with the baby such as powder and wipes well in advance.

* Make sure flea and worm control is up to date. A check up by your vet is a good idea while you have the time. Trim claws in advance of baby arriving.

* Obtain a recording of a baby crying and play this regularly at home so puss gets used to the new sounds prior to the arrival of the real thing.

Managing a Multi-cat Household

Cats generally prefer independent living, but not necessarily solitary living. Owners should respect the living arrangements that the cats establish and not force interactions.
It’s essential to supply each cat with her own “resources”, which include a feeding area, bowl, bed and scratching post. Have one litter box for each cat, plus one extra in the house.
Make sure you provide areas to climb, toys for play and safe places to hide or sit such as tunnels or high perches.

Find the time to give each cat some individual love and attention each day.

Keeping Cats Happy Indoors

Cats are much safer living indoors. They are not exposed to the dangers of infectious diseases, predators or motor vehicles. Most cats are happy indoors, but you must create an enriched environment.

* Provide a climbing tower and at least one scratching post. Cats love rooms with a view and a few high spots to survey their domains.

* Give them lots of cat toys – furry ones, colored ones, jingly ones and rolling ones as well as tunnels and boxes to play in.

* Bring the outdoors indoors with a pot of “cat grass” available at most nurseries.

Finally, Dr. Warren advises, look for help when tackling situations with your cat. Consult your veterinarian, talk to friends and gather information. Tune in to “Housecat Housecall” presented by Purina Cat Chow, to watch Dr. Warren and her team visit homes across the country helping cat owners address everything from a boisterous cat with lots of energy to more complex matters like helping a once outdoor cat adjust to an indoor lifestyle. The show airs on Animal Planet Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. EDT/PDT and 8 a.m. EDT/PDT on Sundays, through the end of August. For credible advice beyond the show, visit housecathousecall.com where you can pose your individual feline questions to a team of cat care specialists and view all of the webisodes from season one.

If you are one of the more than 38 million cat-owning households in the U.S. you may want to rethink how you care for Fluffy, both to be more environmentally friendly and to protect your cat’s health.

“We love our pets, and just as we work to make our lives environmentally sensible, we can adopt ‘greener’ pet care habits to better care for our pets’ health and environment,” says Jill Cordes, host of America’s first broadband pet channel www.Petstyle.com.

In addition to everyday eco-sensible habits you might be adopting for yourself, like buying organic food and shopping with reusable bags, Cordes suggests following some simple pet care practices this spring, just in time for Earth Day on April 22:

* Cats love to clean themselves, and it’s a good idea to keep your pet’s environment clean and gentle. Replace traditional pet care and cleaning products that may contain harsh chemicals with gentle, all-natural products.

* Keep your kitty’s tummy happy as well. Added hormones or pesticides aren’t good for you to eat, so why do you think they’d be good for your cat? When shopping, look for pet food that is natural and organic.

* Eliminate odors in your spring-fresh house and choose eco-sensible kitty litter, like Arm & Hammer Essentials Clumping Cat Litter. It’s made with natural biodegradable corn fibers, which are a renewable resource and sensible for the environment. Plus, it’s formulated with Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, which naturally prevents litter box odors. Visit www.armandhammeressentials.com/litter.aspx to learn more.

* Avoid creating a home for fungus and other nasty organisms. Make sure your cat has fresh water and food daily to eliminate potential disease, insect or other pest infestations. Also, filtered tap water is better for both you and your cat because you aren’t throwing a plastic bottle away or potentially giving your pet contaminents from the bottle.

* Recycle household items by turning them into play toys. Take the rope out of your drawstring pants, and you can have kitty jumping, leaping and pouncing for hours. Roll up a pair of gloves into a tight ball, and she’ll be trying to dig it out from under the couch every time you turn your back. If you decide to replace carpet somewhere in your house, keep a couple of scraps and attach them to boards for her to roll on, scratch and climb. Just remember, snuggle time on your lap is probably her favorite — and most eco-friendly — time spent during the day.

(ARA) – Do you hate your pet’s breath? Well, did you know that bad dog or cat breath is a sign of dental disease? About 80 percent of humans brush our teeth at least twice a day, according to the American Dental Association. But most of us completely neglect our pets’ teeth. There is no time like the present to start maintaining the dental health of your four-legged friend to help prevent problems like gingivitis, periodontal disease, infections and tooth loss.

“There are many symptoms of dental disease to watch out for, including bad, almost putrid, breath,” explains Dr. James Cook, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. “Your pet could be in a lot of pain, and you might not realize it. For example, if you see your pet approach a bowl of food then back away, that could be a sign of tooth pain. Your animal can’t tell you he or she is suffering or in pain, so it’s important to get your pet’s teeth checked by your veterinarian.”

Here are six tips to help keep your pets’ smile healthy:

* Brush their teeth.
Specially made toothpaste in flavors like chicken, seafood, beef and mint and soft, pet-friendly toothbrushes are available at pet supply stores or from your veterinarian. With some training (visit www.avmatv.com for a 5.5 minute instructional video) pets can learn to tolerate or even enjoy a daily brushing.

* A dental checkup.
If you’ve never had your veterinarian check your pet’s teeth, your pet is long overdue. Schedule an appointment today. Veterinarians recommend at least an annual checkup of your pet’s teeth. If periodontal disease is found, your pet can be sedated for teeth cleaning.

* Give a rawhide treat.
Rawhide is that piece of raw leather your dog looks forward to so much, but it also helps scrub plaque off your pet’s teeth. A small daily treat that makes a dog so happy could save money at the veterinarian years from now and save your dog’s teeth. Check with your veterinarian to make sure rawhide is an appropriate treat for your dog.

* Wrap up a rope toy.
Rope toys for dogs and cats help keep plaque and gingivitis at bay. Just carrying a rope toy in their mouth helps to keep an animal’s teeth clean, and playing with it does an even better job.

* Try dental treats.
Specially made dental treats are available at pet stores and at your veterinarian’s office. These treats are made to be difficult to chew and swallow, and are shaped to help scrub teeth as they’re consumed.

* A pet food present.
Consider feeding your pet a specially formulated pet food designed to improve dental health in pets.

For more information on pet dental health visit www.avma.org or www.avmatv.com.

Your cat personifies the graceful, enviable sure-footedness of her species. But what about her eco-footprint?

With 88 million domesticated cats in the country (according to the National Pet Owners Survey by the American Pet Products Association), the question isn’t just academic. Like their human companions, pets’ modern lifestyles consume natural resources and can contribute to environmental issues like greenhouse gases and the waste stream.

”As consumers and responsible pet owners, we are all looking for ways to care for our pets’ health and their environment,” says Jill Cordes, host of America’s first broadband pet channel www.Petstyle.com. “Many of us are already putting eco-friendly practices into action in our own lives, from buying organic food to shopping with reusable bags and switching to natural household cleaners. Adopting ‘green’ pet care habits is a natural extension of our environmental consciousness.”

You can become a “greener” cat owner with 10 simple steps, Cordes advises:

1. Give them shelter. Overcrowding at animal adoption centers strains resources. You can help ease the problem – and possibly save an animal’s life – by adopting from a shelter rather than buying a cat from a pet store or breeder. You may also save money if you adopt from a shelter where many animals are likely to already be vaccinated, spayed or neutered. Visit www.aspca.com for more information.

2. Use protection. Get your cat spayed or neutered. Unplanned, unwanted ”deliveries” often wind up in shelters, contributing to the overcrowding problem. Plus, spaying and neutering can help reduce your cat’s risk of developing uterine, ovarian, or testicular cancer.

3. Tag, you’re it. Be sure your cat always wears a name tag (or license, if your municipality requires cats to be licensed). If he gets lost, the tag will help any good Samaritan who finds him return him to you. Plus, you’ll conserve the gas you would waste driving around the neighborhood hunting for him, and the paper for those ”missing” posters.

4. Keep it clean – and gentle. Replace traditional pet care and cleaning products that may contain harsh chemicals with gentle, all-natural products.

5. Potty all the time. Choose environmentally friendly cat litter like ARM & HAMMER Essentials Clumping Cat Litter. It’s made with natural biodegradable corn fibers which are sensible for the environment, and absorbs twice the liquid compared to regular clumping clay litter. Plus, the addition of baking soda eliminates odor problems instantly. Visit www.armandhammeressentials.com/litter.aspx to learn more.

6. Food for thought. Just as added hormones or pesticides in your food aren’t good for you, they’re not good for your cat, either. Look for pet food that is natural, organic and FDA-certified.

7. Quench their thirst. Change your pet’s water and food bowl regularly to eliminate potential disease, insect or other pest infestations. Be sure to use filtered tap water rather than bottled water, which weighs on your wallet and the environment.

8. Play ball. Purchase toys made from sustainable fibers or recycled materials, or entertain your cat with homemade toys crafted from recycled materials, like a scratching pole made from old carpeting. And remember, you will always be her favorite – and most eco-friendly – toy.

9. Into the wild … or not. Try to keep your cat inside as much as possible to avoid exposure to injury, illness and predatory wildlife. If your cat craves the outdoors, however, try to keep his outside time supervised in an enclosed area.

10. Purr-tanical gardens. In an enclosed space, plant a small garden in your backyard for your cat and stock it with cat-safe herbs and flowers. Just be sure kitty is always supervised, and stays in her own yard – otherwise you may find yourself having to explain her embarassing visit to your neighbor’s tomato patch.

When you have a cat for pet, it is not as simple as many people make it out to be. There is some important cat care information that all cat owners should be aware of, in order to ensure that you and your cat get along well and that the cat has a long and healthy life.

Cats need much more than just food, water and a bit of play time. They need lots of love and attention, and regular trips to the veterinarian just as you need regular trips to the doctor. There is some very important cat care information and cat care information tips and tricks that you will find handy, regardless of which breed of cat you have, and which will be discussed in detail here.

Food & Nutrition

One of the most important issues of all when it comes to cat care information relates to food and nutrition. Your cat’s nutritional needs are going to change as they grow from a kitten into an adult, and you need to ensure that you are properly accommodating these changes and constantly changing her diet to provide her with the nutrients that she needs to strive.

Providing her with a premium cat food formula for each different stage of her life is critical and is going to give her nutrition that will help to keep her fit and healthy.

Safety

Safety is another important issue here, and although cats are usually fine when they are grown, just as with babies you need to use caution with kittens and ensure that they are not in harm’s way. Your cat depends on you to be safe, and taking a few simple precautions will help make sure that they are safe and secure.

Cats can bring a great deal of joy to your life, but you need to make sure that you are taking proper care of them. As long as you feed them the right food, ensure that they always have fresh drinking water available and are getting enough exercise, they should be substantially healthy and live a long life.

Also keep in mind that this is only a bit of cat care information and there is much more out there for you to absorb.

Whether you speak to your veterinarian for more information on this or just do research on your own time, it will only be to yours and your cat’s benefit by educating yourself more on all of this.

Of all the different cat care information that one could learn, none is more important than cat pregnancy information. After all, just as with people, there is no more important time in a cat’s life than when they are pregnant, and so you want to make sure that you are taking the best possible care of them.

Are They Pregnant?

The first step in the process of learning cat pregnancy information involves learning how to tell that your cat is even pregnant to begin with. This can be difficult because most of the symptoms are different in cats than they are in humans, so you need to know what to watch out for.

Cat pregnancy information tells us that for the first couple of weeks of pregnancy you may not even notice any changes at all, but a pregnancy can be detected by your veterinarian around 17-18 days of age by abdominal palpitation. Only around the fifth week of pregnancy will the abdominal enlargement actually begin and you will be able to see the physical changes in your cat.

Taking Care of the Mother Cat

Now you need to worry about taking care of the cat, which is where the following cat pregnancy information comes into play. Although you may want to let them rest all the time, it is important that you keep the pregnant cat active, in order to help her maintain her muscle tone and keep from gaining too much weight.

Supplements can be healthy but you do not want to overdo it because if you do, you will most likely end up doing more harm than good. Also, if you are adding multiple supplements to their diet, you will want to get a list of all the different ingredients and nutritional labels and take everything to your veterinarian first in order to make sure that it is still balanced.

The last bit of cat pregnancy information discussed here involves the mother cat giving birth. At least two weeks before she is due to have the kittens, you should set up a nesting box so that she has time to get used to it before going into labor.

You want to make it warm and comfortable, and large enough that it will be able to accommodate a bunch of kittens. Do not allow her outside of the nesting box as the due date draws closer, because the last thing you want is for her to end up having the kittens somewhere in the house without you knowing about it.

If you own a housecat, there is certain house cat information you are going to want to be aware of. Starting from cat breeding information to cat pregnancy information, by making yourself more educated on this house cat information you will not only feel more comfortable owning a cat but as well ensure that you cat lives as long and healthy a life as possible.

The Basics

There is a bit of basic house cat information that you should learn first. For one, domestic cats have intrigued humans for thousands of years, and are used as symbols of beauty, grace, mystery and power, and are favored as pets all around the world today. The domestic cat is actually second only to the dog in terms of popularity as a house pet, which is the main reason that house cat information is so useful to know.

Grooming

Grooming is very important, regardless of the breed of cat you are dealing with. Whether purebred or a mixed breed, one of the key rules to good grooming lies in the length of a cat’s coat. This is because a cat with a shorter coat will generally not require as much grooming as a cat with a longer coat.

There are dense-coated shorthaired cats such as the American shorthairs which require a monthly grooming session, and longer haired breeds such as the Tabby cat which require much more frequent grooming.

You should comb their fur while they are in the bathtub if it is longer and tends to get knotted and tangled easily, because this will keep it from getting matted as it dries. Make sure that you are using a proper shampoo, and you should never use a human shampoo on your cat.

Also, if your cat is younger this will be much easier because then you can get them used to bathing and other grooming techniques by performing these tasks as they grow up and they will not dread them.

There are also a few other issues that need to be taken seriously when it comes to house cat information, namely diet and exercise.

No matter what breed of cat you have, it is important that you learn how to take proper care of them so that you can get them in an optimal state of health and maintain it. Especially if your cat has certain health problems you are going to need to ensure that you are taking the best possible care of them.

Whether you are looking for house cat information or any other sort, cat breed information is critical to learn if you want to take proper care of your cat. Of all the different cat breeds and cat breed information, the cat breed information on the Siamese breed is some of the most interesting.

The Siamese breed is one of the most popular and well known, and if you are one of the many Siamese cat fans out there, you will be very interested in the following cat breed information.

The Basics

One of the most unusual aspects of the Siamese patterns is that they are known for being tempo-sensitive which means that the density of the color is affected by the ambient temperature that the cat lives in. To be more exact, higher temperature will cause the pigment to lighten.

This is definitely a very unique, unusual characteristic that is profound of the Siamese breed and which interests most people.

There are various different Siamese colors and patterns to choose from, and while the original Siamese had a dark brown face and ears and dark brown on the legs and tail, there are various other color choices out there as well.

Another important piece of cat breed information on the Siamese breed involves grooming the cat. Siamese cats require subtle grooming, rather than an intensive effort, which is especially favorable if you do not have much time on your hands.

One of the most popular grooming areas is in and around the ears, and the ears on a Siamese cat should be large and exaggerated. You will want to get rid of any hairs that are too long and look out of place, and also trim other areas on the body of the cat if you want to emphasize the elegance of this breed.

When it comes to brushing, this should be done sparingly, because too much brushing will end up damaging the color and condition of the coat. The best idea is to use a small rubber brush, which you can find at most pet stores for a very affordable price.

This is just a small fraction of the vast amount of information on Siamese cats that is out there, so whether you are planning on getting a Siamese cat for a pet or already have one, it will be useful for you to learn as much as you can on the breed and on what you can do to raise them properly.
