There are several different breeds of wild Amazon parrots. Each breed of wild Amazon parrots is brilliantly colored, and, once tamed, will make a great pet.

Orange-winged Amazon Parrot

The orange-winged Amazon parrot name is inspired by the brilliant orange colored feathers on the tips of the wings. If you suspect that you are looking at a wild orange winged Amazon parrot you should also look for a pale blue face and blue beak, and bright blue feet.

The orange-winged Amazon parrot is an extremely social bird; it is very rare to see one parrot when it is apart from the rest of its flock. When the orange winged Amazon parrot is nesting only the female takes care of the nest. She typically lays anywhere from two to four eggs. While she sits on the eggs and waits for her chicks to be old enough to leave the nest, the male orange winged Amazon parrot takes care of his mate by bringing her bits of food, and whatever material she needs to maintain the nest. In addition to the three week incubation period, it takes two months before the orange winged Amazon parrot chicks are ready to leave the nest.

One of the personality characteristics of the orange winged Amazon parrot is excessive chewing.

When captured this breed of wild Amazon parrot makes an excellent pet, but it’s temperamental nature makes it a bad choice for a novice parrot owner.

Lilac-crowned Amazon Parrot

If you are in Southern Mexico and happen to see wild parrot flocks where all the birds are bright green with beige beaks, a red faced and to tops of their heads are a brilliant blue, then you are probably looking at a flock of Lilac-crowned Amazon parrots. These small parrots are an extremely active bird and are beloved by parrot lovers all over the world. In addition to being active this particular breed of wild Amazon parrot is also very intelligent, when domesticated they are easily taught how to speak and

The Lilac-crowned Amazon parrot is an extremely social breed of parrot and in the wild the flocks will sometimes be as big as 2-300 birds.

The Lilac-crowned Amazon parrot doesn’t lay as many eggs as other breeds of parrots; the typical clutch size is usually only 2 eggs, which the hen incubates for 29 days. The chicks won’t be ready to leave the nest until they are least 2 months old, and once they do leave the next both parents continue taking care of them for another three weeks.

Although they are sometimes seen in low area’s, near open water, most Lilac-crowned Amazon parrots prefer to living in the wooded areas of the mountains.

This particular breed of wild Amazon parrot was officially recognized by Dr. Otto Finsch. The good doctor wrote over four hundred articles about the wild Amazon parrot.

If you want to avoid having to call a grey parrot rescue team, you will want to think twice before you buy a parrot as a pet. Many pet store owners will tell you that they are a great pet to have, but if you are not prepared to take care of an exotic bird, you might be turning your new pet over to a grey parrot rescue organization sooner than you think.

Considering A Parrot Rescue Adoption

If you want to get a parrot as a pet, you will want to consider a grey parrot rescue adoption rather than buying the bird from a store. The people with the organization will give you all the information that you need to know in order to properly care for the bird as well as the estimated cost it will take to house and feed the bird. What you want to do with this information is decide whether or not you are ready to handle an exotic bird.

Because most people believe that exotic birds should not be kept as pets, a grey parrot rescue organization will never try to sell or trade an exotic bird. They strictly work with finding people to adopt the birds. These birds were born usually in captivity and would not survive in the wild. The kind, generous people that get a grey parrot rescue adoption know that all life is precious and a bird should not suffer for the mistake of their previous owner.

Knowing that these birds are special is the first step in understanding the care that they need. Because they are from the rainforest, they need baths at least three times a week to keep their feather clean and healthy. They also need mental stimulation. If you are thinking about getting a parrot, you will want to know about the noise factor. They call a lot, and although they are able to mimic humans, most of them are not interested in doing so. You will also have to buy them plenty of toys to play with in order to keep them from being bored or lazy.

A lot of care goes into a grey parrot rescue adoption that most people will admit they cannot handle. If you have the time and the money, a parrot can be a great companion to you. Visit your local parrot sanctuary and talk to the professionals there who can give you more information on whether or not your are ready for a grey parrot rescue bird.

The three variations of Senegal parrots have done really well in captivity, making them one of the most common kinds of parrot in the pet trade – and also in animal rescue shelters. Senegal parrots are one of the breeds often recommended for those who want a parrot. They are small, like people and have a delightfully goofy personality. This means a lot of people who shouldn’t decide to be Senegal parrot breeders. How can you tell a good Senegal parrot breeder from a bad one?

Can You Be Strong?

If you really love birds and agonize whenever you see a sick or mistreated bird, then you really have to wonder if you should deal with Senegal parrot breeders at all. This is on the off chance you find a really nasty Senegal parrot breeders. You may wind up buying a parrot anyway – just to get it away from that Senegal parrot breeder! This is the worst thing you can do. The money just supports the horrible practices of the horrible Senegal parrot breeder.

But if you know you can walk in and out without laying the money down, then you certainly should research local Senegal parrot breeders and make appointments to see them and their stock for sale and meet the parent birds. If you do come across a bad Senegal parrot breeder, calmly say “No, thanks”, go home and then call the police.

Take Your Time

If you really want a young Senegal parrot, then there’s no need to rush. Rushing to get a bird will only have you wind up with a bird you can’t get along with. There are such things as bird shows, in which everyone from Grey parrot breeders to Senegal parrot breeders get together and exhibit their stock. This is a great way to meet and compare a lot of breeders at once.

Ask for references fro a Senegal parrot breeder. You should have them cheerfully and politely reply and give you the contact addresses, even if they only give you their vet’s contact information. This is a sign of a professional, as well as someone who stands behind their birds.

You also need to make sure that they offer a contract and look this contract over. Usually, they will be willing to take the bird back at any time during the life of the bird – provided that they are still alive, of course (Senegals can lie to be 50 years old!)

The wild Quaker parrot is a smaller variety of parrots, that stands approximately 11 inches tall and as a wingspan of 48 cm, about the same size as a pigeon. The wild Quaker parrot’s body feathers are a bright green with a pale under belly. Silver feathers create a pale fasce mask and extend down the throat. More silver feathers along with a few dark blue feathers can be found in the tail, and on the tips of its wings. Wild Quaker parrots are also called a Monk parrot, or a Quaker parakeet.

Location

Long ago wild Quaker parrots were only found in South America. They were introduced into the wild in North America when their owners grew tired of their pet birds and released them into the wild.

Most parrot experts believe that a vast majority of the wild Quaker parrots in the United States can be traced back to The Great Escape in 1967. During late 1967 there was a large shipment of wild Quaker parrots being introduced to the country with the intention of being sold at pet shops around the Eastern United States. While the shipment was at the Kennedy Airport the birds were mysteriously freed.

Most of the wild Quaker parrots were turned loose during the 1960’s. Wild Quaker parrots can be found in 8 states and there are currently over 100,000 wild Quaker parrots loose in Florida.

Attracting Wild Quaker Parrots To Your Home

If you are a bird lover and live in an area where wild Quaker parrots are often seen there are some things that can be done to attract the birds to your yard. The first thing you need to do is to set up some bird feeders that are filled with foods that the wild parrots like. While wild Amazon parrots are seed eaters, most experts believe that the seeds are not enough to ensure that the parrot remains healthy. If decide to start feeding the wild parrots around your house, it is something that you have to keep doing once you get started, especially in the winter months when the birds will other wise struggle to find food.

In addition to feeding the wild parrots you should provide them with some place to nest. Quaker parrots are prolific breeders, if they are able to find a place where they can nest. The best way to proved a nesting place for the wild parrots is to provide them with a few nesting boxes. If you live in an area that has a great deal of old trees, the wild parrots will nest in the hallowed tree cavities.

There are many different parrot species right in this country that are being bred and sold for pets. But to avoid having to go in and perform grey parrot rescue or eclectus parrot rescue operations, people should know that before they get a parrot, they should do the research on the bird and how to take care of it properly.

Some Things You Need To Know

No one wants to make an eclectus parrot rescue because of a neglecting owner, so before you decide to buy a parrot know your information on an eclectus parrot. Rescue is not always an option for each and every bird, so you will want make sure to make all the arrangements before you decide to raise a bird of your own.

Most parrot species can live a long time—eighty years for some of the larger species. This means that they will expect to be around you for a long time. Eclectus parrot rescue can come and take the bird if you are no longer able to care for it, but you should not rely on a parrot sanctuary in order to get rid of a pet that you no longer have the desire to take care of.

The cost for a parrot or other type of exotic bird can be significant. You must take it to the proper vet for regular checkups, buy food, toys, and also make sure that you have a roomy cage for him to sleep in. The costs exceed those of a normal pet like a cat or dog because these are exotic pets. They need special care and attention.

An exotic parrot will also want a lot of attention from you. They need mental stimulation and interaction daily. This will help them behave well. If you take the time to talk and interact with your parrot each day, they will stay healthy and happy. Parrots do have the ability to mimic speech, but no one can promise you that they will. Mimicking you is not a reason to buy a parrot—in fact, some people have turned over their eclectus parrot rescue organizations because they thought they got a defective bird. Most birds will not want to mimic your speech, but they will be very noisy. They consider you part of their group and want to communicate with you.

If you are not fully committed to taking care of a bird like this, then you do not want to get one as a pet. However, if you are interested, you will want to contact your nearest parrot sanctuary and check out your adoption options.

Quaker parrots often are called by many other names, such as Monk parrot or Grey-Breasted Parakeet. Quaker parrot breeders are often called by many other names, too, but we can’t print any of them here. One of the problems some people have with Quaker parrot breeders is that this is one of the breeds that novice bird breeders start out with. Getting your pet bird from a novice Quaker parrot breeder has its advantages and disadvantages.

Some Advantages

Some advantages of dealing with a novice Quaker parrot breeder is that they don’t charge as much and they can be easily intimidated. Also, for practical purposes, novices also have a tendency to really put a lot of attention and time into the first couple clutches of parrot chicks they raise.

These novice Quaker parrot breeders will often be so gung-ho to make a name for themselves and their birds that they will take the babies from the parents and hand raise them. Hand raised parrot chicks are often a lot more tame than their bird-reared kin, but they can become imprinted on people – especially one person – and suddenly not be interested in other people (including the new owner) or any other Quaker parrots you try to have live with them.

Some Disadvantages

For the novice pet bird owner, the disadvantages of dealing with a novice Quaker parrot breeder or novice Senegal parrot breeder outweigh the advantages. Although a Quaker parrot breeder could be well read and well informed about Quaker parrots, until they actually raise a few chicks, they really don’t know what they’re doing. No amount of book-learning can deal with the actual experience.

Also, many inexperienced Senegal and Quaker parrot breeders do not realize that they should offer a solid contract with their chicks – and then be able to stand behind that contract. Excellent Quaker parrot breeders will answer questions about health, training and behavior of the birds at no extra cost – and some don’t seem to realize that their service to you does not end when the check clears.

Other disadvantages are that many backyard or novice Quaker parrot breeders really shouldn’t be breeding birds at all. Good novices will be honest and maybe even give the birds away – as long as they have checked out that you are a good home. But others are just interested in any money they can get and then they never want to hear from you again.

The wild African grey parrot with its steel gray feathers and white ringed eyes, defies our preconceived ideas that all parrots are brightly colored. People first started capturing wild African grey parrots about 4,000 years ago, domesticated these parrots live between 60-90 years. When upset the wild African grey parrot ruffles its feathers in an attempt to make itself appear larger and more ominous to its predators. Wild African grey parrots are most commonly found in the Congo.

Wild African Grey Parrot Breeding Habits

The only obvious distinction between the female wild African grey parrot is that she is a little lighter then the male. The first thing you should know about the wild African grey parrot is that they are a monogamous bird, once the male finds a mate they stay with their mate. When they’re fertilizing the hen’s eggs, the male and female breed several times daily.

Both the wild African grey parrot and the wild Quaker parrot is that the female prefers to nest in a hollow tree. She prefers to be left alone while she is waiting for her eggs to hatch and when she cares for her young chicks. The desire to be by herself when caring for her young is unusual because during the rest of their time the wild African grey parrots are social animals who are typically found in flocks. When the hen finally goes into the nest to lay her eggs, she will normally lay between 2 and 3 eggs, these eggs are called a clutch. After laying the eggs, the hen will watch over the eggs for 28-30 before they hatch.

Just before the wild African grey parrot’s eggs hatch, the female will start eating a great deal of food, she does this so that she can add an extra layer of fat. This extra layer of fat will help sustain her while she is caring for her newly hatched chicks. The mother will spend the next three months caring for her chicks.

Wild African grey parrots are extremely protective when it comes to their young. If you happen to notice that you have a pair that is nesting in your backyard you would be best to leave the nest alone. Not only is there is a good chance that the parrot will attack you if it is aggravated. If the wild African grey parrot is truly uncomfortable where it is nesting it will leave, abandoning the eggs.

There are thousands of parrots every year that are sold at pets. These parrots are many times sold to people who cannot handle taking care of them. Amazon parrot rescue centers throughout the country take in these birds who have been mistreated and neglected because the owners did not know how to properly care for an Amazon parrot. Rescue comes in when people just cannot provide the care for these birds anymore. You can take your part in Amazon parrot rescue if you are willing to help people understand the care that these birds need.

Getting Involved With Amazon Parrot Rescue

Amazon parrot rescue centers and organizations are the best place or a parrot that is being mistreated or is found to be not taken care of well. You help with an Amazon parrot rescue in a variety of different ways. First, you can learn all there is to know about these birds. Much of what Amazon parrot rescue experts do are to talk to children and adults at schools and other events in order to help them understand all about theses birds. They will talk about the birds and then show how much care and attention that these birds need in order to live a happy and healthy life.

Another aspect of Amazon parrot rescue is the actual rescue itself. Those trained in animal Amazon parrot rescue should be the only ones to handle the birds, but once the birds are brought back to the organization’s site, they are rehabilitated and adopted out to loving owners. These owners are screened thoroughly and know how much care and attention that is need for an eclectus parrot. Rescue is only one aspect of the job—the rest falls to finding these birds a good home to live in.

A great way to get involved in Amazon parrot rescue is to ask if you can volunteer for the organization. Being a volunteer means that you would be doing a variety of jobs for the organization including answering phones, preparing and sending out information material, and other types of jobs that will give the public a better awareness about the responsibility of having these birds as pets. If you are an animal lover, you will want to volunteer are your nearest Amazon parrot rescue center. They will appreciate the help and you can feel good about knowing you are part of a great program to keep these birds happy and safe.

Moving away from home can be traumatic. Add to that living with strangers and having to leave behind beloved pets, and it’s a wonder anyone wants to go to college at all.

Luckily, some colleges are starting to recognize the fact that when students are allowed to bring their pets with them to live in the dorms, it’s better for everyone (except those with allergies, I guess, but even then, the animal-friendly rooms are on designated floors).

Although currently only a handful of colleges are open to the idea, those that are require pets to be up to date on all vaccinations, and students must also pay a deposit for the privilege of having Fido or Fluffy live with them.

Most colleges that do allow pets have their own set of rules as well, however.

The housing contract at California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, takes things a step further by requiring students to specify who will care for their pet if they cannot.

Eckerd College requires students to have the pet at home for at least a year prior to enrollment.

At Stephens College, they have teamed up with Columbia Second Chance (a rescue group) to allow students to foster pets in the dorms.

Indiana University allows small rodents, reptiles, rabbits and amphibians.

UCLA, Caltech and MIT allow cats (the Caltech Animal Team, or CAT, even helps with the feral cat population on campus).

Looks like the next dorm party might resemble Animal House in the literal sense!

More and more, large birds like parrots are not being sold in pet stores anymore. This is for the same reason that puppies are no longer sold in many pet stores. Both puppies and parrots should never be bought on impulse and need screening before they can bring animals home. This is why it’s best to get your new feathered friend directly from an Eclectus parrot breeder rather than a pet store. A good Eclectus parrot breeder should ask you a lot more questions than just “Cash, check or charge?”

Your Bird Experience

Your Eclectus parrot breeder should ask you what you look for in a good pet. In this way, they will help know if you are right for the demands and commitment needed to cohabitate with one of their babies. An Eclectus parrot breeder or a good Quaker parrot breeder will also quiz you on your past experience with pet birds.

About Your Lifestyle

Although an Eclectus parrot breeder needs money just as badly as the next person, they should never be into breeding their birds just for the money. Often, breeding parrots will not be their sole means of support. This means they can better match you with a bird – or help you get the pet that’s better for your personality and circumstances.

You will be asked about your job, how long you spend at home each day, who will be taking care of the bird and other seemingly strange questions like that. You will also be asked some strange questions like, “How long do you think these parrots live?” Obviously, the Eclectus parrot breeder knows the answer to this – so why are they asking you? To see if you are mentally and emotionally prepared to take on a bird.

Really good Eclectus parrot breeders will give your home a check to see if it is parrot-proof and what your neighbors are like. He or she may even quiz the neighbors about their attitudes to loud pets (as all kinds of pet parrots are loud). Good Eclectus parrot breeders will never sell to a family that has a child younger than five.

Written Contract

You’ll also be asked to read your contract carefully before signing. Some parrot breeders will give you a copy of the contract and limited health guarantee for free, so you know what you are getting yourself in for. Sometimes they will have a copy of this contract on display on their web sites.
